Story and context

Description

The fall of 1979 The Mighty Iaeger Cubs Football Team went 10-0 on their way to the first IHS football team Class AA football playoffs. During that season I was one of the managers of the football team. That is a fancy name for Water Boy! LOL Hey I had the best seats for every game. I got to run up and down the sidelines following the line of scrimmage making sure Greg Bailey had a good clean football so he could turn around and hand it to Allstate running Back Mike Addair. Plus, relaying back to the coaches how close the ball was placed to the first down yard marker. Like I said the Best Seat in the stadium! There was a Buckeye tree in mom's front yard. You know like the Ohio State Buckeyes. Will somewhere along the line I was told buckeyes were good luck. And the fall was season for the tree, and the ground was covered with them. Starting at the first of the season I would take a handful of Buckeyes and give them to some of the players. It started with Chucky Baby Dotson. We were best friends and neighbors. After a couple of games, it caught on and by the end of the year I had All State Greg "Game Ball" Bailey (his nickname was game ball because he was awarded so many honorary game balls for having a good game) and Allstate Mike Addair and several others asking me for a Buckeye for good Luck. Will our luck run out in the playoffs and Man High School beat us up Welch on Mt Views field. We were ranked higher than Man High School and got homefield advantage, but Iaeger's Fanning Field didn't meet WVSSAA 's requirements so we played there. By then Buckeye season was over and I didn't have any Buckeyes to pass out. We lost! If any of my Teammates remember me giving them Buckeyes for luck, please share a story about that season. I did the same thing for the 80 team as well. Support this Web Page by posting Stories and pictures if you have any. I could tell you stories about the Greatest High School Band in the Country the Band of Gold but most everyone is still alive and married. Some are attorneys and doctors and do not need the stories ruining their reputations!! LOL

Mayor Perry Roberts awarded Coach Bivens the Key to the City of Iaeger for being the first coach in IHS history to go undefeated and make the playoffs. Keith Wagnor was the Band of Gold was the Band Director. The Band was State Champions if that award had been awarded. The Band of Gold was so large it took at least 2 school busses just for the Band Members to get to the games. Maybe 3 I cannot remember for sure. Do I am some stories about riding those buses on the way home from away games. I mean Enisha Lochart use to.... And Randy Mullins (an Attorney at Law now) use to...Okay I better shut up! LOL. Oh and my DEAR DEPARTED FRIEND Connie Hall!!! What a beautiful girl and person! I miss Connie. I was in love with her but never told her! The band buses were so much fun.
